Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cells naturally exist in the body. Modern science and medicine has paved the way for using stems cells in the treatment of injuries and wear and tear areas of the body. By introducing harvested and concentrated stem cells from the patient’s own body, these stems cells promote repair and often resolution of the condition. Atlantic Spine Center is proud to offer this modern and effective procedure especially for degenerative-type disc diseases and conditions of the spine.
Frequently Asked Questions About Stem Cell Therapy
Where are the Stem Cells harvested from?
The most common and richest source comes from your bone marrow. The preferred access location is from the Iliac crest (front tip) of the hip bone.
What happens next?
Once extracted, the marrow concentrate with the adult stem cells and growth factors are spun down for separation in a special machine. Once ready, the cells are then implanted into the problem area.
Is this procedure approved by the FDA?
While the harvesting of bone marrow cells from the iliac crest is a FDA-approved procedure, the injection of adult mesenchymal stem cells is still being evaluated by the FDA. However, because the processing of the of the bone marrow cells to concentrate and isolate the stem cells falls under the guidelines of minimal manipulation, the procedure meets the FDA definition of acceptable practice of medicine.
What Conditions can Stem Cell Therapy treat?
- Spine - Disc related back pain, Facet joint disease, Degenerative disc disease
- Shoulder - Rotator cuff injuries, Cartilage tears, Osteoarthritis
- Hip - Osteoarthritis, Cartilage tears and injuries
- Knee - Osteoarthritis, Meniscal (MCL) tears, ACL or PCL injuries
